New Campaign Against Violence and Intolerance in Israel

Washington, DC - Americans for Peace Now today launched a new campaign, urging Americans who care about Israel's future to raise their voice against political violence and intolerance in Israel.

The campaign, Stop the Violence, Stop the Hate, features a new interactive web page that combines education with activism.

The site documents incidents of violence by Israeli settlers and ultra-nationalists against Israelis and Palestinians, as well as efforts to clip the wings of Israel's pro-peace and pro-democracy camp. The site calls on friends of Israel worldwide to comment on these alarming challenges to Israeli democracy. It also offers an option to sign an online petition rejecting the attacks on Israel's pro-peace and pro-democracy movement.

The site also features comments and short essays on this issue by American authors and activists such as Michael Chabon, Ayelet Waldman and Letty Cottin Pogrebin and by prominent Israelis.

"We are alarmed by the ugly wave of fanaticism, zealotry and intolerance that we are recently witnessing in Israel, which targets Israel's peace camp," said Debra DeLee, APN's president and CEO.

DeLee said: "The battle for peace takes place not only between Israelis and Palestinians but within both societies. It takes place between pragmatists and fanatics, between those who are willing to compromise to safeguard their free and democratic future, and those -- on both sides -- who view Israeli-Palestinian relations as a zero-sum game. For friends of Israel worldwide, this is the time to show where they stand. We must all choose whether we stand with the forces of democracy, tolerance, political pragmatism and peace, or with the fundamentalist zealots, who through violence and hate prescribe perpetual strife and international isolation for Israel."

APN is America's leading organization advocating for the security of a Jewish and democratic Israel through peace agreements with its neighbors.
