Prevent Gaza War; Demand American Leadership Now Israeli forces are preparing for a possible large-scale incursion into the densely populated Gaza Strip to root out Hamas militants, to destroy the military infrastructure that supports Hamas' daily launching of rockets into Israel and to bomb the tunnels that militants use to smuggle weapons from Egypt. Some observers expect a massive military campaign to start once Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert returns to Israel next week, after his White House meeting with President Bush November 13. Such an incursion could trigger another Middle East war that would reverberate much beyond the narrow borders of Gaza. So far, Israeli military actions have been restricted to "surgical strikes," as well as air bombing and artillery shelling. This week, 18 civilians were killed by Israeli artillery shells in the town of Beit Hanoun in northern Gaza. A full-scale incursion will involve many more casualties, on both sides. It is also likely to spill over into the West Bank. It could trigger hostilities with Egypt. It may ignite violent demonstrations in Arab capitals, further destabilizing moderate Arab regimes. President Bush could use his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert Monday to start stabilizing the situation in Gaza and prevent the next Middle East war. Focused American diplomacy, which could involve mobilizing assistance from our allies, could save lives and prevent further deterioration in the region. Please contact President Bush. Ask him to prevent the next war in Gaza.
